Chicago Police Officer Shot by Suspect in Handcuffs

A chicago police officer was shot after apprehending a suspect. The suspect has a history of mental illness, but I’m not sure how relevant this is to the incident at hand. The suspect was shot dead because he fired off shot at police officers from the back seat of their own patrol unit. My word of advice to law enforcement officers is that if you had followed proper police procedure, this whole incident may have been avoided completely. Actually, it would have definitely been avoided.
      As reported in the Chicago Tribune news story, the suspect wa&s cuffed with his hands out in front. Proper procedure would have been to apprehend, search and cuff the suspect with his hands behind his/her back. At this point is when you place suspect in the transport vehicle. Maybe the problem here is that the average law enforcement agent has become accustom to living above the law, and feel rules don’t apply to those who have a badge and gun. I strongly feel the need to reevaluate how we discipline law enforcement agencies who intentionally break laws, rules, policy, and regulations. Otherwise, allowing them to run red lights, drinking and driving, and possession of narcotics, to name a few offenses, is nothing more than a continuation of anarchy.
